Data Repositories for Physical and Chemical Oceanography

This list includes the major repositories that principally host physical and chemical oceanography data for the Southern Ocean. Much oceanographic data is also held by National Antarctic Data Centers and other multidisciplinary data repositories.

  Argo Free-drifting profiling floats that collect oceanographic observations in the upper 2000m of  the ocean
BODC British Oceanographic Data Centre Processes, archives and distributes marine data
CCHDO CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office Global CTD and hydrographic data
GLOSS Global Sea Level Observation System A global network of coastal sea level monitoring stations
GO-SHIP  Global Ocean Ship-Based Hydrographic Investigations Program  Links to several data repositories
GOSIC Global Observing Systems Information Center Data program of GCOS, GOOS and GTOS. Funded by NOAA and National Climatic Data Center
IODE International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange A collection of data platforms for oceanographic datasets, hosted by the IOC
JCOMM Joint Technical Commission on Oceanography and Marine Meteorology Part of WMO, UNESCO and IOC, this site provides a range of data services, including access to real-time data feeds
JCOMMOPS JCOMM in-situ Observing Platform Support Centre Provides oceanographic and marine observations from ships, buoys, floats, and tide gauges
MGDS Marine Geoscience Data System Antarctic and Southern Ocean Data Portal Hosts marine geoscience data collected by US-based survey ships
 NCEI  National Centers for Environmental Information (NOAA)  Hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this site holds environmental data, principally collected by US-based research projects
NOAA ERDDAP National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ERDDAP server Oceanographic data in gridded and tabular formats
NSIDC National Snow and Ice Data Center (United States) Holds chiefly US-based data on the Earth's frozen zones
OCADS Ocean Carbon Data System (Formerly CDIAC-Ocean) Provides data management support for major oceanic CO2 projects
  Ocean Ecology Science Research Portal Links to satellite data from the SEAWiFS, MODIS Aqua and Terra, MERIS, OCTS, CZCS and Aquarius platforms
  OceanSITES Hosts data from long-term deep water reference stations, that measure oceanographic variables from air-sea interactions to 5000m depth
OOI Ocean Observations Institute OOI deploys sensors in arrays of moorings, mobile assets, and cabled sensors to measure oceanographic variables.
  PANGAEA An open-access data library for georeferenced earth system data
PO-DAAC Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center Distributes NASA's ocean and climate data
POGO  Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans  Hosts cruise reports from ships in the European fleet. In the future, it is expected to also host cruise reports from US and Australian ships.
PSMSL Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level Provides tide gauge data
R2R Rolling Deck To Repository Hosts cruise reports from NSF-funded research vessels
SOCCOM Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling SOCCOM uses autonomous floats to collect oceanographic observations
