Mooring data is a mainstay of oceanographic data collection because of its unique capacity to collect time-series of data from a fixed location and throughout the water column. However, data from those moorings which do not qualify for inclusion in the OceanSITES database (www.oceansites.org) are often hard to find because they are held in disparate data repositories or have not made their way beyond the hard drives of individual PIs.

SOOS and our partners in the US are beginning a project to make Southern Ocean data easier to find and share. We have received funding through the Big Earth Data Initiative to hire a student to help data owners submit their data to repositories, including the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), who fund BEDI. As part of this effort, we will compile a comprehensive map of Southern Ocean moorings. This will make it easier for researchers to find mooring data, no matter who collected it, or which repository it is held in. If you have mooring data that is not housed in a publicly accessible data repository and would like help to get it archived, or if you know of data sets that you’d like us to help bring into the public eye, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
