I hope you enjoyed the November issue of SOOS news, there was so much to update you all on, that we have to deliver another issue almost immediately!
This newsletter issue includes multiple calls for nominations for SOOS leadership positions, SOOS at COP25, preliminary information for SCAR2020 and a new SOOS contact database.
The SOOS International Project Office (IPO) will be closed for much of December and January with the IPO staff taking leave over this time. The SOOS IPO thanks everyone for a productive 2019, wishes you all a safe and productive Southern Ocean summer season, and looks forward to working with you all in 2020.
SOOS activities are overseen by the international Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), which meets annually to provide scientific direction for SOOS. We are opening a call for nominations for new scientific members for terms starting mid-2020. Get more information here.
With the establishment of all 5 SOOS Regional Working Groups (RWGs), SOOS is now looking to grow the leadership base of these networks, to ensure diversity in the leadership groups. Additionally, this year sees two long-standing RWG Leads stepping down from their positions. SOOS thanks Andrew Constable (Indian Sector), and Mike Williams (Ross Sea), for their hard work and dedication to these groups. Information on the call for nominations for new leadership group members are available for the Indian Sector here and Ross Sea RWGs here.
SOOS was invited to present at Earth Information Day alongside COP25 in Madrid! Our Co-Chair, Sebastiaan Swart, presented a poster on behalf of SOOS highlighting the current state of the Southern Ocean, and priority gaps in our understanding. The poster is available here.
Several SOOS groups will be holding side-meetings prior to SCAR2020 (Hobart, Australia). In addition to a number of RWG and Capability Working Group meetings, the Executive Committee, Scientific Steering Committee and Data Management sub-Committee annual meetings will all take place. For information on all upcoming SOOS meetings, please visit the SOOS Calendar. It would be fantastic to see a strong representation of the observational community at the SCAR Open Science Conference, and we encourage you to submit an abstract. More information is available here.
The SOOS IPO have been implementing a new contact management system to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of SOOS communications. As part of this process, a new contact form has been created and the IPO ask you to update your profile to receive updates on SOOS activities and products, and/or join a SOOS working group. If you haven’t updated your profile since August 2019, please complete the new form here to continue receiving SOOS Newsletters.
