Facilitating and Enhancing Global Southern Ocean Observations
Since 2017, Turkish Antarctic research activities have occurred under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, and carried out under the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology. Between 2017 and 2019, coordination was conducted by the Polar Research Center of Istanbul Technical University (PolReC) within the scope of the National Polar Science Program (2018-2022), which was prepared by 120 Turkish Scientists from 36 institutions.
To ensure that polar research activities include a greater international participation and are conducted in a more systematic manner, the Polar Research Institute (PRI) was established under the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) in November 2019. The main aim of the institute is to conduct the National Polar Science Program (2018-2022) with scientific collaboration across related national/international institutions.
The institute will ensure that;
As well as the scientific goals, membership procedures in international organizations and unions will be followed. In this context, priority will be given to the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and International Arctic Science Committee (IASC).
SOOS is a great foundation for providing best and critical knowledge about the dynamic Southern Ocean system to the international scientific community. Therefore, TUBITAK PRI believes it is important to collaborate closely with SOOS.
