Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Monthly Discussions 2021

Sarah Fawcett and Steve Diggs, the co-chairs of SOOS' EDI group, would like to invite you to help us kick-off a reinvigorated set of monthly workshops related to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion discussions from 2020. These upcoming workshops will have limited foci with an emphasis on impactful outcomes. Activities will include but are not limited to position papers in journals with wide distribution, as well as internal recommendations on best practices specific to SOOS.

Next week (April 11,12 and 13, TZ-dependent), we will be holding two information sessions, each at a time intended to be marginally convenient depending on your timezone. We realize that they are coming up rather quickly, so they will be recorded if you can’t make it.

If you are interested in rolling up your sleeves and doing more than merely discussing EDI topics, there are two immediate actions to take:

We need each of you to bring something to the table. For the first meeting, we would like to start a ‘reading group’ and are seeking EDI-relevant documents from your country and/or discipline. For instance, in USA, EDI/JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) discussions have centered around race and the relationship of the African diaspora to the dominant culture here. However, this is not a relevant EDI topic in countries where there is less racial diversity, and progress on EDI issues will have more relevance along different axes. Field Coordination

SOOS brings together existing communities and observational efforts to enhance the coordinated collection of observations, through the development of coordination networks and tools. These facilitate collaborative logistics, sharing of resources, alignment of observational priorities, and supporting community effort towards achieving the SOOS mission.

Enhancing Capabilities

SOOS enhances our ability to observe the Southern Ocean integrated, multidisciplinary and sustained way, through support of community-driven working groups and task teaks. These efforts focus on development and implementation of technologies, building networks, improvement of observational design, and development of associated methods.

Enhancing observations of the Southern Ocean

SOOS is an international initiative of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). SOOS' mission is facilitating the collection and delivery of essential physical, chemical and biological oceanographic observations from the Southern Ocean, to ensure all stakeolders have access to the data required to address key societal issues, such as sea-level rise, heat, freshwater and nutrient transport, and ecosystem responses to changes in the system.
