New SOOS Data Officer

It is with great pleasure that we announce that Michaela Miller will step up from her role as Project Officer for SOOSmap into the SOOS Data Officer role. The SOOS IPO is happy to have her on board!

Before moving on to SOOS, Michaela was working for the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), where she was a Project Officer for the Great Barrier Reef-wide Data Management System, she now welcomes the challenge of all things Southern Ocean in her new role.

Prior to Michaela's relocation to Tasmania in 2023, she was based in Townsville, QLD at the Australian Institute of Marine Science conducting reef ecology centric research, most notably completing her Masters in 2017 and PhD in 2022 on the ecological impact of microplastic pollution on the GBR. During this time, she fell in love with big data and using well-established monitoring networks to assess the overall health of marine ecosystems. 

Originally from Connecticut in the US, she moved to Australia in 2016 and has called it home ever since. Most of her free time is spent enjoying nature, crocheting beanies for her friends , or trying to convince her dog to go for ocean swims with her.
