The SOOS Metadata Portal is moving data into the cloud

The SOOS metadata portal has a new tool for you to explore, and it’s something that will get even more useful in the future. Some of the big remote sensing datasets hosted by NASA are now stored in the cloud and you can order them directly from the cloud itself. In the future, this will be expanded to let you analyse data in place, rather than needing to download a large and unwieldy dataset on your local machine.

Bringing your analysis to the data is a useful solution for datasets that are large enough that they are unwieldy to download, or where version-control is important. And it’s particularly useful if you’re working in the field and you have limited bandwidth.

or now, you can filter your search results under “Features” so that you see only data hosted on the AWS Cloud. Right now, that’s radar data from European Sentinel satellites, but more is coming. In the future, you will be able to subset and analyze just the data you need, without relying on bulky downloads. Explore now and start thinking about how this might help the next time you’re working with big files or somewhere remote.
