Censusing Animal Populations from Space (CAPS) CWG Welcomes New APECS ECR Representative

Hugo Guímaro is a PhD student at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), affiliated with the Marine and Environmental Science Centre of the University of Coimbra (MARE-UC) and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).
His research focuses on emperor penguins in the Southern Ocean, using satellite imagery, animal tracking, and DNA analysis to study their populations and diet. By applying these tools, Hugo hopes to contribute to improving remote sensing techniques for monitoring species affected by climate change and informing conservation strategies aligned with CAPS goals.
In addition to his research, Hugo is actively involved in education and outreach to raise awareness about the environmental challenges in the Southern Ocean. He is also passionate about photography and hopes to give early career researchers a voice in the working group, ensuring their perspectives shape future research and conservation efforts.
