The SOOS Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group is delighted to welcome Kathy Gunn and Fernanda Marcello to the team. Both will be joining as the new APECS representatives. Congratulations and welcome!

Dr Kathy Gunn finished her PhD in Geophysics and Oceanography from the University of Cambridge in 2019. Until 2021 she had been working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Miami analysing mooring, Argo, satellite, and hydrographic data. Since May 2021 she is a CERC Research Fellow at CSIRO in Hobart.

Kathy's research uses physical and geophysical observations to better understand water mass variability at a range of scales. She has worked on warm water transport and bottom water export around Antarctica, mixing at fronts in the Southwest Atlantic, and small-scale to large-scale temperature and salinity variability in the Indian Ocean.

Dr Fernanda Marcello received her PhD in 2021 from the University of Sao Paulo, where she had been working on the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. At present she is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of Sao Paulo (IO-USP).

Fernanda’s research is focused on the large-scale upper-ocean circulation of the South Atlantic Ocean, considering its role in the context of the Global Overturning Circulation — by connecting the North Atlantic to the Indian, Pacific and Southern Ocean and therefore providing the means through which interocean waters return to the North Atlantic to replenish the formation and export of deep waters. By using model simulation results, she explores different spatio-temporal perspectives of the South Atlantic circulation, motivated by the understanding of past to future climate change.
