Ross Sea Conference in Naples from 3 to 7 July 2023

The IV Ross Sea conference 2023 has been held in Naples – Italy – from 3rd to 7th July 2023. The conference was organized by the University of Naples "Parthenope", The Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn and the Marche Polytecnic University.
Three previous editions of the conference were held in Italy in the 1990s and early 2000, providing an overview of the regional state of the art on its oceanography, ecology, physics, glaciology, geology, and biogeochemistry. This edition of the international symposium was attended by more than 100 scientists from 11 countries and a relevant number of students.

The conference provided a venue for recent advances from models, observations, experiments, remote sensing and other means focusing on the Ross Sea. At the same time, the almost 40 years long activity of the University Parthenope in Antarctic oceanographic research was celebrated.
95 oral presentations and 19 poster presentations were given in the framework of 6 sessions:
Sharon Stammerjohn, Anna Maria Fioretti and Makoto Saito provided wonderful presentations on several aspects of the Ross Sea researches during their talks as invited speakers.
More details on the conference, including the abstracts of the presentations can be found at https://www.rossseaconference.org
The Ross Sea Conference also assessed information regarding climate variability and change, as well as the key mechanisms and interactions that regulate processes on a variety of spatio-temporal scales.
The main results will be published on a Deep-Sea Research Part II special issue.
During the conference the Italian ice-breaker Laura Bassi used for Antarctic research in the framework of the Italian National Antarctic Programme has been visited by the participants to the conference.
During the last day, an exciting guided-tour to the archeological site of Pausilypon was organized for the attendees.

The meeting was supported by SOOS, by the Italian Oceanographic Commission and by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development initiative. The Ross Sea Conference 2023 was realized thanks to the contribution of the Italian Ministry for the University and Research, the Italian National Antarctic Programme, The School of Oceanography of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Alseamar, Codevintec and Nortek.
